Speaker:Marjorie Lyles,Indiana University

Time: Wednesday,22 April, 14:00-15:30 pm

Location: Room 217, Guanghua Building 2

Abstract:

Prior research has demonstrated that alliances provide important learning opportunities for organizations, allowing them to gain access to valuable knowledge. It has not fully established how the experiences in a learning alliance may influence the developing innovation practices of new ventures. Through a unique sample of biotech organizations engaged in R&D alliances with Eli Lilly & Co., a prominent firm in the pharmaceutical industry, this study attempts to uncover the relationship between alliance social interaction and the subsequent innovation strategies and practices of the younger partner firms. Specifically, we explore how partner firms learn and adopt collaboration practices through their alliance experiences. We find that greater social interaction in an alliance enhances the ability of firms to learn collaboration practices, while the degree of similarity in their approach to business moderates how these lessons are applied. The results contribute to a greater theoretical understanding of organizational learning and the relationship between internal and external networks of innovation.
