Abstract

Statistical consulting is a discipline, a profession and an art. How graduate students obtain training in statistical consulting in American Institutions? What are the main topics in a course of statistical consulting? What are the most critical skills to be a successful statistical consultant? What are the most popular areas that require assistance from statistical consulting? These are the main issues to be discussed in the first part of this talk.

A number of cases in the fields of marketing, finance, inventory control, energy demand forecasts, transportation management, legal disputes, medical research, environmental research will be employed to illustrate the previous points. More specifically, I am going to report a case on the profitability by applying a technical trading rule in stock markets.
